As Memorial Day weekend approaches, New Jersey's beaches are in excellent condition, according to Environmental Protection Commissioner Shawn LaTourette. The announcement was made during the annual State of the Shore event in Asbury Park, highlighting the readiness of the state's coastal and inland water bodies for the summer season. LaTourette emphasized that water quality is excellent across New Jersey, ensuring a safe and enjoyable experience for beachgoers.
Lifeguards will be on duty at Island Beach State Park from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. throughout the Memorial Day weekend and will continue on weekends until June 14, after which they will be present daily through Labor Day. The New Jersey Sea Grant Consortium, which partners with the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (NJDEP), plays a crucial role in monitoring and maintaining beach conditions. Dr. Peter Rowe, Executive Director of the Consortium, expressed pride in the partnership, stating, "This press forum kicks off the conversation around the current state of New Jersey’s ocean beaches and shorelines."
Efforts to maintain beach quality include the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers' beach replenishment projects in Lower Cape May Meadows and Absecon Island, with ongoing work in Northern Ocean County and Long Beach Island. The NJDEP also conducts weekly bacterial water sampling and daily surveillance flights to ensure water quality, with updates available on njbeaches.org.
